A waste heat recovery strategy and its deployment: an integrated steelworks case study

Steelmaking is energy intensive, with manufacturing facilities representing some of the biggest point-source carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emitters in UK. Efficiency improvements are essential rising costs, driving significant investment from UK iron and steel sector. However, industry still finds it difficult to justify waste heat recovery (WHR) projects, as individual schemes incorporating capture an end-use for often incur high capital resulting long payback times. This paper describes conceptual numerical development a strategy deployment WHR using large integrated works case study. An existing asset was utilised link together single end-user; thereby reducing requirement each subsequent project. The proposed its discussed, followed by resultant savings (estimated be 2.3 Mt equivalent £45 million), over 6-year period since implementation.
